  32. it has begun worldwide customer shipments of Pages by Pages(tm),
  33. the company's much lauded ObjectBased(tm) software application
  34. that allows users - including those with little or no layout or
  35. design expertise - to write, publish, and present information
  36. easily and effectively.

  38. Pages by Pages, as both company executives and publishing industry
  39. observers agree, represents a complete shift in the document and
  40. presentation creation paradigm. Because the program is
  41. object-oriented throughout, it transcends existing page layout and
  42. desktop publishing programs.

  44. "Pages is one of the few new software products that is not
  45. evolutionary," said Larry Spelhaug, Pages CEO. " Pages is
  46. rule-based and is driven by Design Models(tm), which are the heart
  47. of its uniqueness.  What we do is separate a document's content
  48. from its format, allowing the user to concentrate on writing the
  49. document."

  52. delivering a product that was stable and productive; we now have
  53. that and much more," stated Bruce Webster, Pages' chief technical
  54. officer. "Pages by Pages is a product that's more elegant, mature,
  55. and feature-rich than we had planned. It's a complete product, and
  56. I'm confident that those who viewed it during development as well
  57. as those trying it for the first time will be favorably
  58. impressed."

  60. Pages by Pages, which operates on both Motorola and Intel- based
  61. processor systems running NEXTSTEP(tm) - the industry acclaimed
  62. object-oriented operating system - is targeted to all levels of
  63. users in corporate, government, and education markets. Recent
  64. agreements between NeXT and Hewlett-Packard will soon enable Pages
  65. to run on HP's PA-RISC based machines running NEXTSTEP. NEXTSTEP
  66. will run on Sun's SPARC stations this year, and NeXT and Sun have
  67. jointly agreed to publish the OPENSTEP(tm) specification by
  68. mid-1994.

  70. "We believe that Pages by Pages is such an outstanding product, it
  71. will expand the market for both NEXTSTEP(tm) and OPENSTEP. Pages'
  72. success on these platforms will create a bow wave that the company
  73. will ride into other markets," Spelhaug stated.

  75. Pages by Pages is based on the philosophy that document processing
  76. applications should let the person writing the document focus on
  77. the content, and details of the style of the document should be
  78. built into the application. Styles and rules for the document have
  79. been created for the user in Design Models, which let the user
  80. choose the style of any element of a document in the icon-based
  81. element inspector. Users can also easily re-format or change the
  82. look of the entire document at the click of a button. Pages can be
  83. used for single-page letters and memos or for multi-page reports,
  84. newsletters, manuals or presentations. Because Pages is so simple
  85. to use and offers so much functionality, it makes users more
  86. productive by allowing them more time to concentrate on the
  87. content of their work.

  89. Design Models are the unique part of the Pages system. Design
  90. Models use the expertise of a professional designer and production
  91. person into rules and priorities, that ensure effective page
  92. layout.  These rules govern the behavior of elements that make up
  93. documents or presentations.   Users will be able to select from a
  94. number of standard Design Models that are included with Pages.
  95. Bundled Design Models will meet the needs of users who produce a
  96. wide variety of documents:  letters, reports, proposals,
  97. newsletters, manuals, and presentations. Additional Design Models
  98. will be available and will be priced separately. Design Models for
  99. professional markets such as financial services, legal, and
  100. medical are planned.

  102. The company also said that a Designer Toolkit(tm) enhancement to
  103. Pages by Pages will soon be made available to qualified customers.
  104. The Designer Toolkit will provide tools that allow users to adapt
  105. existing Design Models or to create new Design Models to fill a
  106. specific need. The tools will translate a designer's concepts and
  107. intentions into rules and priorities. Pages Designer Toolkit will
  108. be available at the end of the year.

  110. An introductory special of $595 (a $200 savings off the standard
  111. retail price of $795) is offered for the first 90 days, with
  112. discounts for site licenses and educational institutions. The
  113. introductory price includes the product, four Design Models, one
  114. year free support, one additional Design Model (as they become
  115. available), and a free Pages upgrade. A 30-day license evaluation
  116. unit is available for $14.95.

  122. System requirements are NEXTSTEP 3.0 or higher with a minimum 20MB
  123. of hard disk space and 16 MB of RAM. For NEXTSTEP Intel platforms,
  124. 1024 x 768 or greater resolution is recommended, with a minimum of
  125. 20MB of hard disk space and 16MB of RAM. The product is available
  126. initially on magnetic media, and will soon be released on CD-ROM .
